How much should you save each month in Morocco?

A plain MAD formula — salary minus fixed charges minus debt service — and why the leftover, not a guess, becomes this month's contribution.

Quick answer

Start from leftover, not income: salary minus fixed charges minus debt service equals your leftover, and a savings rate of 10–20% of net salary is a reasonable starting target once that leftover is positive — the exact split then goes toward whichever goal is closest (retirement, a car, a home).

"How much should I save?" is the first question every new saver in Morocco asks, and the honest answer isn't a single percentage — it's a formula you run on your own payslip.

The formula in MAD

Leftover = monthly salary − fixed charges − debt service. Fixed charges are rent, food, utilities, and anything that repeats every month regardless of what you buy. Debt service is what you owe on existing loans, listed separately so it's never hidden inside "charges."

  • Salary: 8,000 MAD
  • Fixed charges (rent, food, bills): 4,500 MAD
  • Debt service: 800 MAD
  • Leftover: 2,700 MAD — the number a plan is built on

Where savers in Casablanca, Rabat, and Marrakech lose the leftover

The leftover rarely disappears in one dramatic purchase. It leaks: a subscription renewed without notice, a weekend that runs long, a "just this once" that repeats every payday. The fix isn't willpower — it's moving the leftover out of the checking account before the month has a chance to spend it.

Make the number automatic, not aspirational

A savings rate only works if it's checked, not just calculated once and forgotten. WealthOS's plan page computes this leftover from your salary and charges, splits it across Bitcoin, gold, Casablanca stocks, and stable coins, and the payday check-in asks — once a month — whether it actually went where the plan said it would.

The goal isn't a perfect percentage. It's a leftover that reaches an asset every single month, in a city where the cost of living moves faster than most salaries.
