Dividend investing on the Casablanca Stock Exchange

Yield on cost, not on today's price — how to read a Moroccan dividend stock without confusing a coupon for a guarantee.

Quick answer

Dividend yield should be measured on your buy price (yield on cost), not on today's market price — a stock you bought at 100 MAD paying a 5 MAD coupon yields 5% on cost regardless of whether the stock now trades at 80 or 120 MAD.

A handful of Casablanca-listed names — Attijariwafa Bank, Maroc Telecom, LafargeHolcim Maroc, Cosumar among them — have paid dividends consistently enough that savers track them specifically for the coupon, not just the price.

Yield on cost vs yield on price

Financial news quotes yield on today's price, which changes every time the stock moves — useful for someone buying today, nearly meaningless for someone who already owns the position. Your own yield on cost only moves when the dividend itself changes, which is the number that actually tells you whether your original decision is paying off.

  • Yield on cost = annual coupon ÷ (shares × price you paid).
  • Yield on price = annual coupon ÷ today's market price — what news headlines usually report.
  • The two converge only on the day you buy; they diverge more with every year you hold.

Forecasting the next coupon, cautiously

Past coupon history — pulled from market data or logged by hand — gives a reasonable estimate of the next payment's timing and rough size, but it is an estimate, not a promise. A company can cut, delay, or skip a dividend when earnings drop, and no forecast model changes that fact.

What WealthOS actually tracks

Log each coupon you receive against the holding it came from. The dividends page compares your logged history to a market-based forecast, and the yield shown is always on your buy price in MAD — never a projection dressed up as a guarantee.

Dividend investing on a market as concentrated as Casablanca rewards patience with a small number of names you understand, not a wide basket you're hoping performs.
