Bitcoin vs gold (PAXG): a Moroccan saver's comparison

Two very different assets that both promise to sit outside the dirham. Here's what actually differs — volatility, custody, and how each behaves in your ledger.

Quick answer

Gold (tracked here via PAXG, a token backed by physical gold) is the lower-volatility, centuries-old store of value; Bitcoin is a newer, far more volatile digital asset with a fixed supply — neither pays a coupon, and the honest comparison is about how much price swing you can hold through, not which one is "better."

Bitcoin and gold get bundled together in conversation because both sit outside the banking system's normal instruments. That's roughly where the similarity ends.

Volatility: the real difference

Gold moves in single-digit percentages most months. Bitcoin has moved 20–30% in a single week, in both directions, more than once. Neither number is a defect — they're just different instruments with different jobs in a book.

  • Gold (PAXG): slow-moving, priced against physical bullion, centuries of price history.
  • Bitcoin: fast-moving, fixed 21-million supply cap, roughly 15 years of price history.
  • Both: no dividend, no coupon — the return is entirely in the price you paid versus the price today.

Custody: who actually holds it

PAXG represents gold held in a vault by a regulated custodian — you hold the token, not the bar, but the token is redeemable. Bitcoin you hold directly in a wallet, or through an exchange account, and the security model is entirely different: a lost seed phrase is not a customer-service call, it's gone.

How WealthOS marks each one

Both show up as a holding in MAD: quantity times the current price, converted from USD when needed. The dashboard marks Bitcoin and PAXG the same way it marks a Casablanca stock — cost basis versus current value, nothing more, nothing implied about which will do better.

The practical answer for most Moroccan savers isn't "pick one" — it's sizing each so the volatile one (Bitcoin) can't force a bad decision, and the steady one (gold) does the job cash used to do before inflation ate into it.
